A new e-cigarette shop called NeXgen Vapors has opened at 4052 Wilmington Pike in Kettering, and its co-founder says he and his partners plan to open six more shops in the Dayton-Springfield region.
Jeff Mohlman of Sugarcreek Twp., one of three owners of NeXgen Vapors, said potential sites for expansion include Springfield and Greenville. The Kettering “vapor shop,” which opened last weekend across from Meijer just south of East Stroop Road, employs 13, Mohlman said.
Two other vapor shops are scheduled to open in Kettering within the next month: Vapor Haus in the Fairmont Plaza Shopping Center near East Stroop and Marshall roads, and Gem City Vapes in the Fountain Square retail center on Far Hills Avenue near Dorothy Lane. Across the broader Dayton-Springfield region, more than a dozen such shops have opened or are in the works, as entrepreneurs jump into a rapidly expanding industry.
Mohlman said the competition will generate awareness and conversation about vapor shops and will boost interest in e-cigarettes. His shop offers custom-blended liquids, as well as a lounge with Wi-Fi and complimentary coffee.
The vapor shops sell battery-powered devices used to vaporize liquids that have been infused with nicotine and flavorings. The surge in e-cigarette retail locations is being driven at least in part by those looking for an alternative to smoking tobacco.
Advocates and retailers say e-cigarettes are a tobacco-free tool that can ease the craving for nicotine without tar and other harmful chemicals found in tobacco. Some public health officials are concerned that nicotine, a controlled substance, is being delivered in a form that may lure children and adolescents.
Ohio already bans the sale of e-cigarettes to minors, and the FDA last month proposed a nationwide ban on sales to minors as well as regulations that would require warning labels and approval for new products. But the agency stopped short of proposing product standards or restrictions on flavorings.
NeXgen Vapors is open seven days a week. A web site is under construction at www.nexgenvapors.com. For more information, call (937) 813-7139.
