New Centerville business sets opening date

CENTERVILLE — The new business called Raise Your Brush will host an open house and ribbon-cutting on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and will open for business two days later.

Raise Your Brush, at 169 N. Main St. across from Benham’s Grove, blends hands-on art classes with wine and beer. It is the brainchild of former middle-school art teacher and Kettering native Laura Carter, who owns the business with her husband Andy.

Tuesday’s open house will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., featuring free appetizers; drinks will be available from the shop’s bar, Carter said. A ribbon-cutting with Centerville city officials is scheduled for 6 p.m. Open-house attendees will receive a $10-off coupon for any session they attend in February. Raise Your Brush opens fully on Jan. 31.

Carter holds a degree in fine arts from the University of Dayton and taught art at Smith Middle School in Vandalia for 12 years until she was laid off last spring due to the failure of a school levy.

Most Raise Your Brush sessions will focus on painting, but some will involve craft-making, Carter said. Sessions also will be available for private parties.

“Many women go to jewelry parties or kitchen-gadget parties in the evenings, just to get out of the house and have a glass of wine with their friends,” Carter said. “We will offer a much different experience for people to get away for a few hours, and to get creative at the same time.”

A similar business called Paint By The Glass is located at 8179 Princeton-Glendale Road in West Chester.
