Ohio unemployment falls to 4.7 percent

Ohio’s unemployment rate edged down to 4.7 percent last month from 4.8 percent in July even as employers statewide shed 2,000 jobs, the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services reported Friday.

Last month’s jobless rate was slightly higher than the state rate for Ohio a year ago, 4.6 percent, but still lower than the U.S. rate for August of 4.9 percent, the jobs report showed.

Goods producing industries, such as construction and manufacturing, and the leisure and hospitality industries led job growth last month, adding 5,200 jobs. But overall job gains were insufficient to offset losses in professional and business services (-5,500), trade, transportation, and utilities (-2,400), other services (-2,400), and educational and health services (-1,600).
