Seven new cases of Zika in Ohio

There have been seven new travel-related cases of the Zika virus reported in Ohio in the past week, although none of the new cases were found in the nine-county Miami Valley region, according to the latest updates Friday from the Ohio Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The total number of cases in Ohio now stands at 33. All of the Ohio cases were brought back to the state by infected travelers returning from Zika-plagued countries, including Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

As of Wednesday, there were more than 10,200 confirmed cases of Zika in the United States and its territories. But Florida remains the only state with active transmission of the mosquito-borne virus that causes birth defects and neurological disorders in adults.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott confirmed Friday that the Zika virus is being spread locally by mosquitoes in Miami Beach, prompting a new travel advisory by federal officials.

At least five people have been infected there, including one person from Texas, one from New York and another from Taiwan who each have returned home but were infected while traveling in Miami Beach, Gov. Scott said during a news conference.

Previously, officials had pinpointed local infections in a one-square-mile area north of downtown Miami known as Wynwood.
