Summer concert roundup

Previewing shows for Dayton, Cincinnati and Columbus

HELPING YOU PLAN

Turn to Active Dayton every Friday for information about local and regional things to do. We can save you time and help you plan your social calendar.

There are few cherished warm weather activities like a summer concert.

It’s a time to get together with friends and strangers alike for a communal experience driven by the power of live performers. It’s a few hours to forget about work and family responsibilities and get washed away by the music.

So turn off the television, log off the Internet and power down your mobile devices and engage with fellow music fans at a live show.

Tour buzz: Hot tickets for the summer 2013 include Kenny Chesney, Bruno Mars and the Dave Matthews Band.

More tour buzz: While unlikely to be candidates for top-grossing tours of 2013, other highly anticipated acts on the road this summer include Steve Martin & the Steep Canyon Rangers featuring Edie Brickell, The National, Sheryl Crow, Rush, Hunter Hayes and Fitz & the Tantrums.

Power in numbers: As always, there will be a plethora of package tours this summer featuring established acts such as the Kings of the Mic tour with LL Cool J, Public Enemy, Doug E. Fresh and De La Soul, the Last Summer on Earth Tour with Barenaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five and Guster and Americanarama Festival with Bob Dylan & His Band, Wilco, My Morning Jacket and Richard Thompson Electric Trio.

Festival time: Music festivals are as much a part of summer as baseball games and pool parties. This year is no different with signature events in Dayton such as the Cityfolk Festival at RiverScape June 28-30 or the Women in Jazz Festival at Dave Hall Plaza Park on June 23, or newer additions including the second annual Bunbury Music Festival in Cincinnati July 12 through 14.

Here’s a look at just some of what’s in store at regional venues such as Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati, the Schuster Center in Dayton, JD Legends in Franklin and LC Pavilion in Columbus. Free shows, specially priced shows and unusual start times are noted. The venues are listed in alphabetical order.

As always, concerts are subject to cancellation and/or changes in date so consult band and venue websites before purchasing tickets or finalizing plans.
