Fairborn teachers ratify multi-year contract

Teachers and classified employees approved a new multi-year agreement with the Fairborn school district on Tuesday night.

The approval of the deal, by members of the Fairborn Education Association and the Fairborn Classified Employees Association, ends several months of negotiations between the district and the unions.

A final draft of the agreement was drawn up Feb. 10 after a six-hour negotiation session.

Union members, more than 350 teachers, faculty members and support professionals in Fairborn City Schools were given several days to review the agreement before Tuesday night’s vote.

“We just wanted our contract to be recognized because they signed it three years ago,” said Brian McWhorter, FEA spokesman.

“Just because it expired, labor law in Ohio says it rolls over and is still in effect until you have a new agreement, and that was really the point of contention,” he said.

A message seeking comment was left with the superintendent.

The agreement came one day before a scheduled hearing on an allegation of unfair labor practices the unions filed against the district.
