Commissioners OK ED/GE grants

Unnamed project gets $350K for a hoped-for 345 new jobs

Montgomery County commissioners unanimously approved nine development grants Tuesday, including one for a still-unnamed company that county leaders hope will bring 345 new jobs to the Dayton International Airport in a $33 million project.

In all, commissioners hope that a total of $1,115,000 in development grants — drawn mainly from county sales taxes — will fuel 796 new jobs and 504 retained jobs across the county.

Of all those jobs, about 70 percent are employed by companies already here, said Commission President Judy Dodge.

That’s the sign of a healthy local economy, according to Dodge and Erik Collins, development director for the county.

“These companies want to retain the positions that are here, plus create new ones, which is great for the community,” Dodge said.

Collins said the company possibly heading to the airport may be identified next month.

Also approved Tuesday were grants for Honda Tier-1 supplier Green Tokai, which has its U.S. headquarters in Brookville and aims to create 57 new jobs, a Beavercreek Twp. defense contractor that could bring 115 new jobs to Miami Twp. and Riverside defense company Radiance Technologies, which is expected to create 50 new jobs while retaining 100 existing jobs, at average annual salaries of about $95,000, Collins has said.

The grants — called ED/GE or Economic Development/Government Equity grants — are awarded in two rounds each year, in the spring and in the fall.
