Animal cruelty charge alleges sex abuse of pup

A man has been arrested on a charge of animal cruelty after an adopted 8-month-old puppy was found to have injuries consistent with sexual and physical abuse, according to a Dayton police incident report.

The puppy, a female pit bull mix, was returned to the Montgomery County Animal Resource Center on March 18 after the dog's owner said she believed the dog had not been spayed because it continued to bleed from its vaginal area.

An exam by a veterinarian found that the dog had been spayed, but also had injuries to the ears consistent with blows to the head and trauma to the rectal area.

Kevin Ballard, 55 and the husband of the dog's owner, admitted to police he would smack the dog if it urinated.

He denied doing anything sexual to the dog.
