Arrest made in 1992 murder case

An Arizona man has been charged in the death of Richard Woods, whose body was found wooded area alongside a road in Washington Twp.

An Arizona man has been charged with murder in a 22-year-old cold-case investigation.

The body of Richard Woods, 41, of Columbus was discovered in a wooded area alongside Middleboro Road in Washington Twp. on Nov. 9, 1992.

Sam Perone, 67, of Phoenix was arrested today and charged with murder in the case, according to the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.

On Oct. 1, a Warren County grand jury issued a secret indictment of Perone for Woods’ murder.

Detectives from the Warren County Sheriff’s Office went to Phoenix, and with the help of the Phoenix Police Department and the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, served a search warrant on Perone’s home and took him into custody.

He is now awaiting extradition back to Ohio to be arraigned on one count of murder.

Woods disappeared on Oct. 8, 1992, as he wrapped up a business trip in Lebanon.

There will be a press conference at the Warren County Sheriff’s Office on Friday, where more information will be provided.
