K-9 units, officials finish sweep of Troy school in bomb threat

UPDATE @ 12:53 p.m.:

Police and K-9 units found no problems in a check of Troy High School Monday, Nov. 13, after a bomb threat was found on a boys’ restroom wall late Friday afternoon.

School officials announced the closing Monday of both the high school and the nearby Troy Junior High School late Sunday evening.

Superintendent Eric Herman said options for responding to the threat were discussed extensively over the weekend including several hours Sunday by school leaders and police.

The threat stated basically that the high school would blow up at 8 a.m. Monday, Herman said.

K-9 units from Wright Patterson Air Force Base and the Dayton International Airport at Vandalia helped police search the building Monday morning, Troy Police Capt. Jeff Kunkleman said.

Herman said the two schools were closed because of their proximity. “The buses drive by and the kids walk across this campus (high school) on their way to the junior high,” he said. “You have to be safe.”

The decision to search the building Monday a.m. was made Friday in discussions with police but the decision to close came Sunday. Other activities were held in the high school over the weekend.

Herman said the building was not searched until Monday because the threat specified Monday morning.

“The threat was for 8 a.m. so we would have had to do it again,” he said. Kunkleman said police are investigating. “It’s a real serious thing,” he said.

“We will investigate to the fullest and, if we can find someone responsible, will charge them with everything we can.”

He said the decision of when to search and take other measures such as closing school is never easy.

“There is not right way to go. They pondered it for a long time. We want to do what is best for the safety of the children,” Kunkleman said.

A K-9 unit from the Dayton International Airport is also on scene in Troy. Superintendent Eric Herman said he thinks it's "terrible" that students do these types of actions.

“A lot of time, a lot of expense involved in this but we need to be safe,” Herman said.

If it’s found to be a prank and the culprit is identified, they will be prosecuted to the full extent, said Troy police Captain Jeff Kunkleman.
