Mail, packages being stolen in three counties

Mail and packages have been stolen from mailboxes and porches in at least three counties — Montgomery, Miami and Darke counties.

The crime spree may be over thanks to Miami County deputies who arrested a man earlier this month following a pursuit of a stolen truck and a man witnessing a theft firsthand.

Brian C. Mader is in the Miami County jail on 10 charges, including theft, failure to comply with a police officer, vandalism and drug possession.

The pursuit occurred on Sept. 14 after Mader, who was driving a stolen truck from Greenville, allegedly stopped in front of a home in Miami County and stole a motorcycle for sale in the front yard of the home.

The pursuit ended with Mader’s arrest. Deputies found a large amount of stolen mail in the truck.

Maj. Steve Lord of the Miami County Sheriff’s Office said Mader swallowed cocaine and heroin and had to be hospitalized before being going to jail two days later.

A Union resident told our reporter he’s had a package stolen from his porch and credit card information stolen from mail in his mailbox, which were used to buy items.

Union police Chief Mike Blackwell said Mader has stolen packages delivered by the U.S. Postal Service, Fedex and UPS.

Federal authorities also may pursue charges.

How can you protect yourself from package and mail theft?

The Better Business Bureau suggests:
