Man gunned down in front of his children

A Dayton man was gunned down in front of his girlfriend and children Tuesday night, and police are questioning the man they believed pulled the trigger.

Dayton police arrested 24-year-old Michael Felton Wednesday afternoon. He was being questioned by detectives for allegedly shooting 40-year-old John Turner Jr. in the parking lot of the Eagle Ridge Apartments on Norris Drive. About two dozen people were outside when Turner was shot in the chest, including Turner’s two kids. Witnesses said seeing such a brutal killing “is not something you forget.”

“I just heard a single gunshot and when I got up from my chair and came outside I saw Mr. John on the floor taking his last breath,” Von Adams said. “The majority of us saw death up close. It’s not a good thing to witness.”

Those witnesses assisted officers in quickly identifying Felton as the suspect. Lt. Wendy Stiver said detectives would interview Felton before booking him into the Montgomery County Jail, and that the Montgomery County Prosecutor’s Office would ultimately decide what charges he should face.

Felton has previous felony convictions for carrying a concealed weapon and burglary. Stiver said Turner knew Felton and the pair were reportedly engaged in an argument when “Mr. Felton produced a gun and shot the victim.”

Turner’s death marks Dayton’s 11th homicide this year, and is the third reported this week.
