Police issue criminal summons to man who left infants in running vehicle

DAYTON — City police issued a child endangerment criminal summons to a man who left two infants inside a running vehicle with the windows rolled down on West 3rd Street while he went inside the jail about a block away around 6 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a Dayton police report.

Tre Anthony Schirmer, 21, is not related to the infants, according to the police report.

City officers were alerted to the incident by a passerby.

“Schirmer stated he was not familiar with the area,” Dayton Police Office Randy Betsinger wrote in the incident report.

Schirmer told police he left the infants in the running vehicle while he was “putting money on a friend’s books” inside the jail.

“We asked Schirmer whyhe did not take the children inside with him, and he did not have an answer for that,” Betsinger wrote.

Police contacted the children's mother about the incident.

“(Their mother) did not seem worried about the situation due to Schirmer only being inside the jail for a brief moment,” Betsinger wrote.
