Sex offender pleads guilty to images of sex with infant, 10 girls

A registered sex offender who prosecutors said videotaped himself performing sex acts with and choking an infant and who coerced or forced at least 10 girls into sex and/or sending nude pictures of themselves pleaded guilty Monday in Dayton’s U.S. District Court.

Robert S. Jones, 29, of Anna, will spend from 25 years to life in prison after pleading guilty to 11 counts in a superseding indictment.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Rose found Jones guilty, but did not schedule a sentencing date. Jones’ plea was conditional so that he could appeal some decisions Rose made.

Jones pleaded guilty to eight counts of production of child pornography, two counts of coercing and enticing a minor into engaging in sexually explicit conduct and one count of committing felonies against minors while being registered as a sex offender.

Jones, wearing orange-and-white Butler County Jail clothing, said, “Guilty” when asked by Rose how he pleaded. When asked by Rose if he had any questions about the fact some counts had maximums of 30 years or life in prison, Jones said, “No, I fully understand.”

According to the statement of facts read in court by assistant U.S. attorney Vipal Patel, one of the girls Jones enticed was 7 years old. The others were from 13 to 16 years old.

Some of the victims were local while others who sent pictures of themselves lived in other states including Indiana, Tennessee and New York.

Jones lived in Illinois when he filmed the sex acts and choking, smothering, slapping and hitting of the infant, Patel said, reading the statement of facts.

Patel said the video showed the infant turning blueish as Jones said to the camera, “You want to see a baby pass… out?” Patel said in court, quoting Jones. “See the spasms, see the spasms, he’s getting ready to pass out” before throwing the child and saying the baby was dead.

Prosecutors didn’t comment after the hearing, but did say the baby in the video is alive.

Agents investigating an unnamed child pornography website allege that a user named “billypedo” was Jones. A search warrant was executed and several electronic devices were seized his residence in Anna, where Jones lived with his fiance.

Though he was a registered sex offender, Jones — who also lived in Sidney and Piqua after moving from Illinois — didn’t show up on Miami County or Shelby County web-based registries because he was 15 when he was convicted of a sex crime.

“Different states do different things as far as juvenile convictions go,” Miami County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Mike Marion said last year. “Not all juveniles are required to register. A lot of that is subject to the discretion of the convicting judge.
