Suspect indicted in gunfire, police chase that locked down school

A 22-year-old accused of firing shots at a man during an argument about littering that led to a police pursuit and school lockdown is now facing felony charges.

Trey McNeal has been held in the Montgomery County Jail since his Sept. 18 arrest as he tried to flee a car that wrecked in a wooded area off West Hillcrest Avenue in Dayton.

McNeal was indicted Wednesday on two counts of improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle; two counts of having weapons under disability for a prior offense; and on one count of discharge of a firearm on or near a prohibited premises.

He will be arraigned Tuesday in Montgomery County Common Pleas Court.

The incident started when a man in the 4600 block of St. Johns Avenue in Harrison Twp. confronted the occupants of a car parked in front of his house after they threw trash out the windows. Following an argument, a passenger in the back seat, later identified as McNeal, fired multiple shots at the house as they drove off, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident and manhunt prompted a lockdown of Belle Haven Elementary School in Dayton, but the school was able to dismiss as usual.

McNeal and two others fled after the crash, but McNeal is the only suspect law forcement officers found.
