Troy man shot by police in 2015 after allegedly threatening officer appears in court

TROY - A Troy man accused of threatening a Troy police officer with a knife as the officer responded to a welfare check request in January 2015 stood mute during a court appearance on a felonious assault indictment Monday, July 3, in Miami County Common Pleas Court.

Kenneth Coleman Jr., 33, was shot by a responding police officer during the Jan. 20, 2015, incident outside an apartment on Mayfield Drive on the city's northeast side. Police said they were asked to check on Coleman after a neighbor reported hearing screaming and loud noises. A police detective said in an affidavit that Coleman refused to drop a knife while walking toward Patrolman Jim Short yelling "shoot me."

Coleman was shot in the legs and hospitalized. He was found incompetent to stand trial in March 2015 and sent to the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Sercies in Toledo for competency restoration.

A county grand jury cleared Short in the shooting in February 2015.

Coleman was indicted on the felonious assault charge in August 2016. Bail was set at $100,000 cash or surety following Coleman's arrest on the indictment last week. Because Coleman did not enter a plea Monday, the case was set for arraignment Wednesday in the same court.
