On Oct. 18, 2015, Evans was home alone with his three-week-old son while his wife went to the store to get medicine for their son’s upset stomach.
The baby reportedly had been fussy due to the transition from breast milk to formula. During the time that the mother was at the store, the baby started crying and Evans could not get him to stop.
According to the release, Evans admitted that out of frustration and anger, he started forcefully bouncing the child in an attempt to get him to stop crying.
At some point, claiming that he did not realize his own strength, he acknowledged that he threw his son onto the changing table and that the child struck his head.
Upon the mother’s return from the store, the baby was observed to have facial swelling and bruising and then became limp and unresponsive.
The mother sought emergency medical attention for her child. At the hospital, the baby was diagnosed with hemorrhages and contusions to the brain, shearing injury to the blood vessels within the brain, retinal hemorrhages and multiple fractures to his legs.
All injuries were determined to be consistent with abusive head trauma and the result of an inflicted injury.
On Friday, Warren County Prosecutor David Fornshell said the baby was recovering but undergoing neurological exams to monitor brain damage and treatment for an eye injury.
Evans’ sentencing has not been scheduled.
