Hamvention kicks off today at Hara Arena

The world’s largest amateur radio convention begins today at Hara Arena.

This year’s Hamvention theme is “The Radio Frontier … Looking to New Methods and Devices in Communication.”

Indoor exhibits are open from 9 a.m.-6 p.m. today, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday.

Outdoor exhibits open at 8 a.m. and close with the indoor exhibits Friday through Sunday.

There will be more than 2,500 exhibits — 500-plus indoor and 2,000-plus outdoor.

“It’s ordinary people doing extraordinary things,” said Jim Tiderman, chairman of the Hamvention.

Tiderman said last year’s attendance was 26,600, and that number is expected to be higher this weekend. The event generates millions of dollars for the local economy, officials say.

“What we do here is offer everything that comes out new,” Tiderman said. “Every product that comes out, anything that’s new for radio, it’s here. We do a lot of stuff for the international space station.”

Wyatt Lyzenga is here all the way from Fresno, Calif., to represent his company M2 Antenna Systems.

“Some of the well known ham radio operators early on came up with radar, different things that you’re accustomed to that you see in the commercial world,” Lyzenga said.

Karen Wampler, director of communications at Hara Arena, said she hopes the venue will host the Hamvention again next year. Hara Arena is among the sites being considered for the new Montgomery County Fair location.

“We are staying here until somebody tells us we can’t come back,” Tiderman said.

Amateur Satellite Demonstrations will be held from 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Sunday.
