Library to open new Northwest Branch today

The grand opening of the new Northwest Branch Library, 2410 Philadelphia Dr. at Hillcrest Ave., will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. today.

The schedule includes a 2 p.m. ribbon-cutting with library Executive Director Tim Kambitsch and elected officials, followed by a 2:30 p.m. question-and-answer session with artists Amy Kollar Anderson and Marsha Pippenger.

The event also will include a Dayton Contemporary Dance Company performance at 3:15 p.m., library mascots at 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., and an “Animals Live” event with the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery staff in the StoryCorner from 3-5 p.m.

Events will continue Saturday with health screenings with Premier Community Health from 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. and meeting the library mascots at 10:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.

On both days, there will be tech tours and gaming, tech studio demonstrations, a making-of-the-library video in the tech lab and green screen demonstrations in the TeenEDGE area.

This is the first new facility to open in the Libraries for a Smarter Future project, the Dayton Metro Library’s system-wide facilities upgrade made possible by voter support of a bond issue in 2012.

At 30,000 square feet, the Northwest Branch Library is the largest in the Dayton Metro system, serving patrons of the former Dayton View, Ft. McKinley and Northtown-Shiloh Branches.
