City, local group spar over mailer sent to Kettering residents

The City of Kettering responded to a yellow mailer two residents sent to about 19,000 homes in April, detailing city personnel costs while comparing salaries and benefits of city employees to other local governments.

City manager Mark Schwieterman gave a 30 minute presentation during Tuesday’s council meeting in response to the mailer residents had been receiving in the mail.

“It gave us the opportunity to present the facts regarding some of the claims in the yellow mailer,” Schwieterman said.

Ron Alban and Sterling Abernathy sent the mailer to correct what they said were “incomplete and confusing” data in one sent out earlier by the city.

Last November, Kettering residents voted to approve charter amendments that would require the city to send residents a tax payer cost report, at the city’s expense.

Schwieterman acknowledged the mailer may have been confusing, but it was confusing because the language of charter kept them from adding information that would have made it clearer. He also said the information presented in the yellow mailer was “misleading on some points and was inaccurate on other points.”

Alban and Abernathy were part of the citizen-led group “Citizens for a Better Kettering” that fought to add five charter amendments to the November ballot, including the amendment that required the the city’s report.

Alban stood by the mailer he and Abernathy sent out, while calling for Kettering to conduct an independent study on city personnel costs relative to other area governments.
