“Our bridge levy that passed in the mid 60s has allowed us to keep up maintenance and as a result, we have some of the best in the state,” said Greene County Engineer Bob Geyer. “As your bridges approach 50 years old you have to replace the superstructure.”
While Geyer said all bridges in Greene County are safe to handle traffic, there are several that are listed as structurally deficient by the Ohio Department of Transportation. One of those bridges is located on Ballard Road and must be monitored, repaired or replaced.
The county also has several other bridges that are labeled as functionally obsolete, which means it’s safe, but not up to modern construction standards.
“In our case, it’s just because they are not wide enough to meet the current standards,” Geyer said.
The projects in the 2017 program are expected to be completed by October, officials said.
