Resident tries to put out house fire, then gets out to let Dayton crew take over

UPDATE @ 9:55 p.m.: The resident who returned to his home on North Horton Street to find it burning did the right thing in getting out of the house after trying to put out the flames himself, Dayton Fire District Chief David Wright said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, he said, declining to speculate whether the fire was suspicious or electrical in nature.

Wright said he was continuing to evaluate the damage before assigning a dollar estimate to it. Crews arrived to find significant flames on the outside wall, extending into the bedroom. He said there was quite a bit of damage on the inside of the home.

"The owner called us and he started taking some buckets and trying to fight the fire," the district chief said. "We don't recommend that. He did the right thing by getting out of the house. Do not ever stay in a house to fight a fire."

The man had at least three dogs in the house, Wright said, and one of them was hit by a vehicle on East Third Street when they all bolted from the smokey house when their master opened the front door.

The dog's condition was not immediately available, but we're hearing the dog was alive at last check by fire crews.

The man and his dogs will be staying with relatives, Wright said, because the house is not livable.
