Dayton National Cemetery needs volunteers for Honor Squad

The Dayton National Cemetery is searching for more volunteers for the newly formed Honor Squad.

The squad fires ceremonial rifle volleys during committal services for veterans at the cemetery on the grounds next to the Dayton VA Medical Center campus.

An orientation session for new volunteers is set for 2 p.m. Friday, June 5 at the cemetery’s administrative building. A two-hour training and certification session with the Ohio Army National Guard will begin at 3 p.m. after the meeting.

The squad seeks anyone age 21 or older who is available to be on call at least one day a week, Monday through Friday, according to the cemetery.

Cemetery Director Michael H. Henshaw said the squad has dropped a requirement all members have to be veterans in hope that will attract more volunteers. The squad has 24 members, but would like to have 40, he said.

The cemetery is located at 4400 West Third Street in Dayton.
