Dead letter returned to DDN after 21 years

A 21-year old mystery parcel has arrived at the front desk of the Dayton Daily News.

A 10” x 6” United States Postal Service envelope was returned to the newspaper which contained a Dayton Newspapers invoice, dated May 13, 1994, nearly 21 years ago. It is addressed to customer on Neal Avenue in Dayton.

Stamped twice on the original envelope, in faded red ink, it says “Found in supposedly empty equipment.”

On the plastic window of the large envelope, it reads “Not deliverable as addressed. Unable to forward.”

Jeff Montgomery, Customer Relations Coordination for the USPS on E. 5th St. in Dayton explained what the “found in supposedly empty equipment” stamp means.

“It could have been found in processing equipment that’s used in the plant, then is not used for a while,” Montgomery said. “Sometimes machines are consolidated and used all over the nation, so it could have been found anywhere in the nation. It could also have been found in equipment that hadn’t been used in years or in between equipment that hadn’t been moved for a long time.”

Curious about the customer, we checked our subscription records, and in a long shot, reached out to the only current subscriber with the name from the invoice. It was not the same person.
