Fairborn proposes permanent traffic changes to roads near Wright-Patt gate

The number of drivers using a Fairborn neighborhood's roads as a cut-through to Wright Patterson Air Force Base has dropped after the city restricted access to the side streets.

A "right-turn only" rule was implemented on Greene, Ohio and South streets in an effort to address high volume traffic to and from WPAFB Gate 1-A, according to a report from the city's engineering division.

The report shows each side street saw a decrease in traffic after the roads were closed to left turns at their intersection with Broad Street.

Ohio Street saw a 37 percent decrease in the number of cars using the road for access to the gate, while traffic on South and Greene Streets decreased by 27 percent and 13 percent respectively.

The traffic control initiative began in November. City Engineer Don O'Connor said his division is proposing to make the road changes permanently given the positive results of the report.

O'Connor said the money required to make the changes permanent will not be available until next year, and until then plastic barriers will remain in place.

The permanent changes will include replacing the plastic barriers with concrete and grass islands on Broad Street, according to O'Connor.

Fairborn's Traffic Safety Committee has approved the permanent changes and the initiative will be presented to the city manager and council for comment.
