Massive fire guts Clayton apartment building, displaces 24 households

UPDATE @ 11:25 a.m., Monday, Feb. 5

No one was injured in Sunday night’s apartment fire on Taywood Road near Meadowbrook at Clayton golf course, said Fire Chief Brian Garver.

WHAT WE KNOW NOW: Clayton fire destroys 24 apartment units

The chief said fire crews from Dayton, Englewood, Union, Huber Heights, Brookville and Phillipsburg provided assistance.

The fire remained hot through the night, the chief said Monday. The state fire marshal will be involved in the investigation, he said.

Clayton firefighters arrived under three minutes when called Sunday night, he said, and found a well-developed fire.

The winter weather made fighting the fire difficult, he said.

“Once we got in the attic we had some issues with wind blowing the fire,”Garver said. “With it being so cold, obviously the wind is blowing and gear is freezing up because of the water.”

“It makes it a lot more dangerous for us to be out here,” he said.

UPDATE @ 8:20 p.m.

A resident said the massive fire tonight started in his neighbor’s apartment, not long after he mentioned he was going to make himself some food for the Super Bowl game.

Deleon Clay said he and his friends sat down to watch the Big Game when they heard a knock at the door and someone yelling “fire.”

When he looked inside his neighbor’s apartment, which was wide open, “the whole corner was in flames.

“When you first come in, the kitchen was all in flames,” he said, and it was quickly spreading.

Clay said he helped to make sure all residents were able to get out.
