Keep moving Dayton: Half of residents do not exercise

From paddling on the river to the nation’s largest network of paved bike trials, Dayton offers all kinds of ways to exercise.

Dayton residents, however, apparently know all sorts of excuses for not getting off the couch.

A little more than half of Dayton residents exercise regularly. The city ranks 114 out of 189 U.S. communities for the share of its residents who frequently exercise, according to the survey recently released by Gallup and Sharecare.

Several of the lowest exercise communities in the nation are located in Ohio, according to the report.

In Dayton, about 52.3 percent of residents exercised for 30 minutes or more for at least three days in the prior week, according to the Gallup-Sharecare survey.

The communities with the highest rates of regular exercise are from Colorado (five communities in the top 25) and California (six communities in the top 25), the groups said.

Almost 70 percent of residents in Boulder, Colo., exercised regularly in the recent past, which put it atop the national list. Fort Collins, Colo., ranked second (67.9 percent engaged in frequent exercise) and San Luis Obispo, Calif., ranked third (67 percent rating).

Six Ohio communities ranked in the bottom 25, including Akron (45 percent regular exercise rate), Toledo (46.5 percent), Cincinnati (47.8 percent), Canton (48 percent), Youngstown (49.1 percent) and the Cleveland area (49.2 percent).

Even Columbus, with its enormous student population from The Ohio State University, ranked lower than Dayton, with 51.5 percent of residents exercising regularly.

The states with the best rates offer plenty of outdoor recreational options. Colorado has mountains to hike, large rivers to paddle and lots of mountain bike trails.

California has great weather, the ocean and some internationally renowned national parks. Skiing and snowboarding is popular in both states.

Some Dayton residents also do not have especially good diets.

About 62.4 percent of residents who took part in a different Gallup-Sharecare survey said they ate healthy the day before, which means Dayton ranked 105 out of 189.

California had the most healthy eating communities, with 10 ranked in the top 25. Naples, Fla., took the top honor, with 75.3 percent of its residents eating well.

The last place finisher was Lubbock, Texas. About 53.8 percent of its residents said they ate healthy the day before.
