Local middle school allows students to skip Islam lesson

Parents at Wapakoneta Middle School in Auglaize County have been given the option to pull their children from a lesson on Islam.

The school's superintendent told Buzzfeed that due to a growing number of 'anti-Muslim incidents,' seventh graders may opt out of a "small part of the state's social studies curriculum."

We have contacted superintendent Keith Horner's office to confirm this, but have not heard back at this time.

The lesson is described as “achievements in medicine, science, mathematics, and geography by the Islamic civilization that dominated the Mediterranean after the decline of the Roman Empire.”

According to commenters on our Facebook page, parents were provided with the permission form on the left to express their decision.
