2 local people make milestone blood donations

Editor’s note: This week in this space we’ll take a break from our Miami Valley by Seasons feature to instead recognize two people who have made a difference by donating to the Dayton Community Blood Center. Miami Valley by Seasons will return next week. The following was sent in from the Dayton Community Blood Center.

Ivan Patterson: Greenville donor Ivan Patterson could think of no better way of closing out his milestone 90th year of life than with a milestone gift of life. Ivan made his 500th lifetime blood donation at the Greenville Ministerial Association blood drive Jan. 9 at the Greenville Church of the Brethren.

He first donated in 1945 at age 18 and his 500th donation was less than a month before his 91st birthday celebration on Feb. 7.

Bert Jones: And in Dayton back on Dec. 22 Bert Jones of Dayton became just the third Community Blood Center donor to hit 600 donations.

His 600 lifetime donations rank only behind CBC’s top donor Wendell Clark from Eaton with 654 and Larry Turner from Xenia with 637.

Bert began donating while in high school in his hometown of Louisville, Ky., in 1964. He began donating with CBC soon after moving to Dayton in 1978.
