Motorcyclist walks away from 90 mph head-on crash with SUV in Dayton

DAYTON — A motorcyclist slammed into an SUV at speeds estimated at 90 mph, was thrown at least 20 feet, got up and walked to a car that had stopped in the aftermath of the wreck. The driver of that car took the motorcyclist to a hospital.

  • The crash, reported about 9:40 p.m. Monday in the 1800 block of North Gettysburg Avenue, caused police to shut down the road from Cornell Drive to North James H. McGee Boulevard.
  • Witnesses told police the motorcycle driver wasn't wearing a helmet.
  • The motorcyclist was treated for minor injuries at Good Samaritan Hospital and was expected to be released Tuesday.

UPDATE @ 12:30 a.m. (Feb. 24): Gregory Alexander, who was driving the SUV the motorcycle slammed into Monday night, said he was on his way home from dinner.

“At that point I realized I was hit by something,” he told News Center 7’s James Buechele. “I just didn’t know what it was because it was dark and all I could see was one light.”

Not until he crawled out of what was left of his vehicle did he realize he had been hit head-on by a motorcycle.

Alexander said he’s hoping to contact the motorcyclist because he’s had to pay for a rental car to get his daughter to and from school. His goal is to get the motorcyclist to help pay for totaling his SUV.

“I’m hoping he has insurance. I hope he was a licensed driver for a motorcycle,” Alexander said. “I’m hoping...my situation can be rectified and I can get on with my life.”

There has been no word on whether charges have been filed against the motorcyclist.

EARLIER REPORT

Witnesses said he wasn't wearing a helmet, Dayton police Sgt. Ryan Halburnt said, noting the motorcyclist suffered minor injuries.

"Miraculously, witnesses said he got up, walked to a car that had stopped to see if he was OK and that vehicle transported him to Good Samaritan Hospital," he said.

The driver of the SUV was a little shaken up, "but everybody's going home in one piece," Halburnt said.

The motorcyclist likely will be cited for failure to control, speeding and reckless operation. The charges will be determined by police department traffic accident investigators.

According to the preliminary investigation, witnesses told police the motorcycle was headed north on Gettysburg Avenue at high speed when it went left of center and into the path of the SUV. Police investigators are estimating the motorcyclist was traveling at least 90 mph on impact.

The debris field was so large that police officers made their way onto the rooftops of several nearby buildings, searching for a victim. The motorcyclist's keys and wallet were found approximately 100 feet from where the collision occurred.

Halburnt said at this point in the investigation, there is no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved with either party.

To what did the sergeant attribute the good fortune of the motorcyclist and the SUV driver?

"Good luck and some people say miracles happen," Halburnt said.
