New Washington Twp. park nears completion

The park will include sports fields, an all accessible playground and walking trails.

Construction is nearing completion on the new Robert F. Mays Park in Washington Twp.

“The open grass areas will be used for lacrosse and soccer, said Arnie Biondo, director of Centerville-Washington Park District. “There will be four full-size fields.”

The 23-acre park, at 10553 Paragon Rd., is being paid for with a combination of donations and grants. Longtime Washington Twp. resident Robert Mays donated $500,000 towards the project in 2013. The park is named in his honor. The state provided more than $200,000 in grants.

In addition to the sports fields, the park will also include a shelter with restrooms, playground and exercises stations and parking for 150 cars. There will also be three acres of native plants on the grounds.

The park’s all-accessible playground is designed to create a safe environment for children with disabilities.

“It will have a rubberized type of composite,” Biondo said. “You will be able to walk on it or wheel on it.

Biodno said the park is needed because the area is expanding.

“There is a housing development going in just east of the park,” Biondo said. “The populations is going to be moving down here.”

Priya Patel, who has lived in the neighborhood where the park is being built for five years, said she is looking forward to using the walking paths with her family.

“My husband and I can take a walk or ride bikes with our kids,” Patel said.

The park is scheduled to be completed by the end of the summer.
