Clayton officer hit by truck, to spend night in hospital

The driver who struck a Clayton police officer this morning was issued a citation for failure to maintain assured clear distance, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol Dayton Post.

The patrol tells us 85-year-old Charles Baker, of Englewood, was driving the Nissan truck that struck Clayton Officer Jim Lock.

Lock has been a part-time Clayton officer since 1978. He primarily works traffic control at Northmont and Northwoods Elementary, according to Clayton Police Chief Matt Hamlin.

Hamlin said Lock is being kept overnight at the hospital for observation. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.

The crash happened within a 20 mph school zone, but it’s unknown how fast the Nissan truck was traveling, according to the patrol.

A Clayton police officer was struck this morning while directing traffic in front of Northmont High School, and National Road (U.S. 40) is shut down to accommodate the investigation.

The incident happened in a school zone, according to officials at the scene.

The officer was struck by a Nissan truck that remains at the scene. There’s not much damage visible on the truck.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Dayton Post is investigating the crash.

Traffic is blocked on National Road in front of Northmont High School where a police officer was reportedly struck by a vehicle.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating a crash involving a police officer being struck in front of Northmont High School.

It’s unclear how serious the injuries are to the officer involved, however CareFlight was initially placed on standby, but was later told not to respond to the scene.

INITIAL REPORT:

A police officer has been struck by a vehicle in front of Northmont High School this morning, according to dispatch records.

Officers and medics responded to the 4800 block of National Road around 7:40 a.m.

It’s unclear how serious any injuries may be in the incident.
