4 remain hospitalized after weekend Champaign County crash

Alcohol is believed to a factor in a weekend crash in Champaign County that sent several adults and children to the hospital with serious injuries.

Three people were flown to hospitals following the crash Saturday night in the 6400 block of U.S. 36 in Union Township.

Crews were dispatched to the scene of the three-vehicle crash shortly before 11 p.m. after dispatchers received multiple 9-1-1 calls concerning the crash, deputies at the scene said.

Some of the victims have been identified by the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

Curtis Stigall, 29; Kelsey Thomas, 27; and Christopher Borders, 27 —all from Urbana — were flown from the scene of the crash to various hospitals, where they all remain in the ICU, Champaign County Sheriff Matthew Melvin said.

Victims were flown to Miami Valley Hospital and Grant Medical Center in Columbus, according to deputies at the crash scene.

Three children were in one of the cars, including a 4-year-old who is still in the hospital, Melvin said.

Deputies described the injuries of those flown to hospitals as serious when the incident occurred.

The crash remains under investigation, said Chief Deputy Rick Jordan, and charges are pending the outcome of the sheriff’s office probe into who was at fault.

But alcohol appears to be a possible factor in the crash, Melvin said.

Deputies at the scene said a four-county crash investigation team went to the scene to determine the cause of the crash.
