5 Vandalia athletes you should know

This week, the city of Vandalia celebrated a birthday of sorts. It first became a village on Feb. 7, 1848.

In the 169 years since then, Vandalia has become a city and began to host events such as the Air Show and Oktoberfest that recur every year.

However, several individuals have made their mark in the sports world.

Here are five names from Vandalia sports you should know.

1. Roger Clemens. Clemens was born in Dayton, and lived in Vandalia until 1977, where he moved to Houston, spending his high school years. He is a seven-time Cy Young Award recipient, and an 11-time All-Star.

2. Josh Betts. Betts resided in Vandalia throughout high school, playing football there, until he went to Miami for college, also playing football. He was signed by the Indianapolis Colts in 2006 as an undrafted free agent.

3. Taylor Decker. Decker resided in Vandalia throughout high school, playing both football and baseball. For his college career, Decker was an offensive lineman with Ohio State who was on the team that won the 2015 College Football Playoff National Championship. Decker currently is a starter for the Detroit Lions as left tackle.

4. Taylore Cherry. Cherry graduated from Vandalia-Butler high school after playing varsity baseball. He went to college at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Cherry was drafted in 2015 in the 32nd round of the MLB June Amateur Draft by the Chicago White Sox.

5. Ashley Sugden. Sugden was a Vandalia-Butler graduate who then studied sports administration at Kent State University in Ohio. Following her college career, Sugden got a job as the marketing manager with the Lakeshore Chinooks, a baseball team in Milwaukee.
