Washington Twp. invest more than $8 million in road repairs

Washington Twp. is investing more than $8 million dollars in road improvements for 2016.

The township’s largest project is estimated to cost nearly half of the road budget. Officials plan to widen Nutt Road, which connects South Main Street and Clyo Roads.

“We will be widening the majority of the road to three lanes,” said Mike Wanamaker. “There will be a center turn lane and storm sewage system.”

Public works is also preparing to widen Paragon Road between Sheehan and Social roads. This project will also add a third lane to help traffic flow through the area and make it easier to turn. That project is estimated to cost approximately $500,000.

“This is a new section that will make the connection to Social Road,” Wanamaker said.

The township has been investing money for the past several years to make major road repairs. Denise Mannley, who has lived in Washington Twp. for more than 40 years, said the road improvements will help make her daily commute much easier.

“There is some potholes that need to be filled in where I live,” she said. “We just need overall better maintenance.”

The remaining road improvements will focus on the roads within the neighborhoods.

Washington Twp. is the largest township in Montgomery County, with a population of more than 32,000, according to data from the township’s website. Officials invest annually to fix the roads in their growing neighborhoods.

“This program addresses the residential areas that need resurfacing in the township,” Wanamaker said. “This year we are going to spend about $1 million on that program.”

Work is expected to begin in June.
