9 ways to get in the holiday spirit

1. Grande Illumination

The festivities for this Dayton tradition begin at 4 p.m. Friday at Courthouse Square and last until 9 p.m. This year, there will be a photo booth where families can take photos with real reindeer. There also will be live music, horse-drawn wagon rides, a gingerbread house display, and more. The tree lighting happens at 7:45 p.m. with the Children’s Parade immediately following.

2. Ice Skating Rink Opens

The ice skating rink at RiverScape MetroPark opens today. The rink is open from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. tonight, 11 a.m. – 1- p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27,. Admission is $5 and skate rental is $2.

3. Put up Christmas Lights

Now that Thanksgiving is over, it’s time to string up the lights and set up other exterior decorations. The forecast looks mild this weekend. On Saturday, temperatures will linger in the mid-40s with a mix of clouds and sun. Sunday will see mostly sunny skies with temperatures reaching the lower 50s.

4. Small Business Saturday

Black Friday is only the beginning of the holiday shopping season. Small Business Saturday begins with retailers all over the area offering deals.

5. Holiday Home Tours

Get a dose of holiday spirit by touring some of the Dayton area's oldest homes. Several area neighborhoods are opening some of their homes for tours this season. This weekend, McPherson Town will open 10 homes, some of which have never been opened for tours before to the public. Later in the season, Oregon District, Grafton Hill, Germantown, and Tipp City will all feature their own home tours. Click here for tour prices.

6. Clifton Mill Lights

The famous lights at Clifton Mill outside of Yellow Springs will illuminate for the first time this season at 5 p.m. Friday. The lights are open to the public from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily through Dec. 31. The cost is $10. Children 6 and younger are free.

7. Meet Santa Claus

Per tradition, Santa Claus will be making numerous appearances throughout the Dayton area this holiday season so he can make note of which toys he needs to make at the North Pole in time for Christmas. Click here for a complete list of the jolly man's appearances.

8. Aullwood Candle Making

Children can learn firsthand about the traditional process of candle making. The event takes place this weekend as well as the weekends of Dec. 3-4, Dec. 10-11, and Dec. 17-18. Aullwood Audubon Center & Farm is located at 1000 Aullwood Road in Dayton.

9. Englewood Holiday Open House

On Saturday, the City of Englewood will once again host its Holiday Open House at the Englewood Government Center. The activities, which include the Englewood Civic Band, children’s entertainment and a visit from Santa Claus, will begin at 6:30 p.m.
