World’s fastest captive cheetah dies at Cincinnati zoo

The world’s fastest captive cheetah will never run in Warren County.

Sahara, also known as Sarah, a cheetah living at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, was euthanized Wednesday at the Cincinnati Zoo.

Sahara has been known as the fastest captive cheetah in the world since clocking a 5.95 second time over 100 meters during a filming by the National Geographic in 2012.

Zoo officials said they planned to move the zoo's cheetah recovery center, where the animals were run for private audiences, from Clermont County to 600 acres in Warren County, this summer.

The 15-year-old cheetah came to the zoo at six weeks old and was raised by Cathryn Hilker, a resident of Turtlecreek Twp., Warren County. Hilker was founder of the zoo's Cat Ambassador Program.
