Clinton has narrow lead over Trump in latest Ohio poll

Poll shows Gov. John Kasich would easily defeat Clinton in his home state.

The presidential race in Ohio continues to be tight, according to the newest poll out Monday.

Hillary Clinton has a narrow lead Donald Trump in the latest Monmouth University poll. However, the poll also shows that if it was a race between Ohio Gov. John Kasich and Clinton it would be a blowout … for Kasich.

The poll has Clinton up over Trump, 43-39 percent. Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson pulls a fairly strong 10 percent and Green Party candidate Jill Stein has less than 1 percent.

“Ohio has been nip and tuck for nearly every presidential election since 1992. As of right now, it looks like that tradition will continue,” said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.

If it was a Clinton-Kasich race, the governor would defeat Clinton 57-33 percent in Ohio.

The Monmouth poll has the same spread as a recent Quinnipiac Poll which had Clinton up over Trump, 49-45.

Other highlights of the Monmouth poll:

* Sen. Rob Portman is defeating former Gov. Ted Strickland, 48-40 percent in his race for re-election. The race is shaping up to be the most expensive Senate race in the nation. Outside groups have already spent $33 million on advertising and the candidates are rolling out ads regularly.

* Clinton is not performing as well as President Barack Obama with minority voters. The poll shows her defeating Trump among black, Hispanic and Asian voters 72-10 percent. However, in 2012, Obama defeated GOP challenger Mitt Romney, 84-14 with those voting groups.

The Monmouth poll of likely voters has a margin of error of 4.9 percent.
