Former Ohio deputy state treasurer indicted for fraud, taking...

A federal grand jury returned an indictment Thursday against former Ohio deputy state treasurer Amer Ahmad and two other men.

Ahmad, who served as a top aide for Democrats Richard Cordray and Kevin Boyce, and two other men are accused of taking bribes, money laundering, wire fraud and conspiracy.

Ahmad along with immigration attorney Mohammed Noure Alo and landscaping business owner Joseph Chiavaroli solicited and accepted bribes from Douglas E. Hampton of Hampton Capital Management in Canton in exchange for lucrative brokerage services business for Hampton, the indictment alleges.

Federal court documents say Hampton and Ahmad attended high school together in Canton; Alo and Ahmad were close personal friends; and Chiavaroli and Ahmad co-owned Green Landscapes and Lawn Care.

Ahmad has been a rising star within powerful Democratic circles. He served as second-in-command in the Ohio treasurer’s office from May 2008 to January 2011. After Boyce lost a statewide election to Republican Josh Mandel, Ahmad was appointed comptroller for the city of Chicago in Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s administration – a job he quit in July.
