Area teams, runners place second at state championship

Close call was the theme of the day for area high school runners in Saturday’s boys and girls high school state cross country championships at National Trail Raceway in Hebron.

The Tippecanoe boys placed second as a team in Division II. It was the fourth time in program history that the Red Devils had placed runner-up. Senior Jay Schairbaum led Tipp by placing 17th over the 3.1-mile course.

Beavercreek was second to Mason in the D-I girls race and Lebanon senior Jacquelyn Crow, the defending D-I state champ, also placed second. Oakwood sophomore Mary Kate Vaughn, the defending D-II champion, was second. Coldwater senior Sarah Kanney, the defending D-III individual champ, was second.

  • Alter (D-II), Badin (D-III) and Fenwick (D-III) posted girls regional final wins to advance to this week's state soccer semifinals. Alter's Avalee Hagerty scored in a 1-0 defeat of Ross. Sophomore Malia Berkley scored in Badin's 1-0 defeat of Lehman Catholic. Fenwick defeated Lynchburg Clay 2-0 behind goals from Katie McCarthy and Alisha Himes.

Badin will play Greater Catholic League Co-ed rival Fenwick at 7 p.m. Tuesday at a site to be determined.

  • Alter (D-II), Versailles (D-III) and Marion Local (D-IV) won regional volleyball titles and qualified for this week's state tournament at Wright State University. It'll be Alter's eighth trip to state in the past 12 years. Local is the defending D-III state champ.
  • Alter defeated Chaminade Julienne 40-14 at Wayne to conclude the football regular season. The Knights (9-1) and Eagles (6-4) both qualified for next week's playoffs.
