Bee-delayed baseball game gets plenty of buzz

Baseball players are used to rain delays, but a delay for bees? That’s a new one.

Players ran for the dugouts in Sunday's game between the Seattle Mariners and Los Angeles Angels after bees invaded the outfield. The bees caused a 23-minute delay in the 3rd inning. (Via CNN)

The grounds crew and a fan in the stands attempted to eradicate the bees and they did — for a little while. The game was delayed again for a little longer in the 4th inning when players and bees hit the field again. (Via HLN)

Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson said, "It was amazing … That dude just came out of the stands and said, 'It's OK, I'm a beekeeper.' It was like a 'Seinfeld' episode." (Via Los Angeles Times)

The swarm moved on and no injuries were reported. Well, actually, this was pretty painful …

“You should BEE yourself really if you’re playing for the Angels.”

“When bees sit down, do you know what they sit on?”

“Their stinger?”

"Their bee-hind.  And ladies and gentlemen, that's your joke for the morning …" (Via KBAK)

Bees aren’t the only thing causing strange delays in baseball games though.

Earlier this year, a Mets-Phillies game was delayed briefly after umpire Brian O'Nora swallowed his chew. (Via The Gothamist)

Just over the weekend, rain coupled with a sewage problem led to the Athletics and Twins game getting put off for hours. (Via The Atlantic)

And it looks like the Angels can't get away from the bees.  In May, the Angels had a bee problem of their own at their home stadium that caused a delay of the first pitch. (Via Sports Illustrated)

And here’s an interesting stat: The Angels are 0-and-2 this year in games where bees swarm the field. No wonder they want to get rid of them.
