Bengal bites: Ross the burner coming to training camp near you in one week

Wide receiver John Ross of Washington runs the 40-yard dash in a record time of 4.22 seconds during day four of the NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium on March 4 in Indianapolis.

Plenty has already been said and written about the speed of wide receiver John Ross, and there are suggestions that the Bengals’ first-round draft choice could help the team out in a fashion similar to Andrew Hawkins a few years back.

That wouldn’t hurt, but the bet here says that the former University of Washington star will be better by a lot.

Ross set the NFL Scouting Combine record of 4.22 seconds last winter. That's blazing fast, 💨💨💨and he's bigger at 5-11, 190. 💪💪💪

Writer Anthony Cosenza of SB Nation studied film of Ross, and marveled, "It's his insane ability to make plays in space. Whether it's on slants, bubble screens or end-around plays, Ross can dance around defenders as well as he runs away from them."

Hawkins did some of that while he was with the Bengals from 2011-’13, especially in his breakout season of 2012 when he caught 51 passes for 533 yards and four touchdowns.

The former un-drafted free agent from the University of Toledo, who played two seasons in the Canadian Football League before the Bengals picked him up, is 5-feet-7, 180 pounds and quick (now with the Patriots). He once ran the 40-yard dash in 4.34 seconds.

Fans, coaches and players can begin drawing conclusions for themselves one week from today, as the Bengals will open training camp July 28 at 3 p.m. on the fields west of Paul Brown Stadium, at 3 p.m. Gates open at 2:30, and admittance is free.
