Bengals RB Bernard out for the year with ACL

A brutal day just got worse for the Cincinnati Bengals with the news that running back Giovani Bernard had a torn ACL and will miss the remainder of the season.

After Pro Bowl wide receiver suffered what is reported to be a serious hamstring on the second play of the game, Bernard left in the final minute after catching passes on three consecutive plays on the Bengals final drive of a 16-12 loss to the Buffalo Bills at Paul Brown Stadium.

Rex Burkhead replaced Bernard with 38 seconds remaining and Bernard headed to the locker room with a trainer. Several players and coaches came up to Bernard in the locker room to express their condolences, and a Bengals source has confirmed the news first reported by USA Today’s Tom Pelissero of the the torn ACL.

Bernard, who signed a three-year, $15.5 million contract extension in June, had seven carries for 21 yards and five catches for 40 yards Sunday. He ranks second on the team in rushing with 337 yards and is second to Green in receptions (39) and ranks third in receiving yards (336).

Starting safety Shawn Williams (hamstring) and starting cornerback Dre Kikrpatrick (knee) also left Sunday’s games with injuries as the team fell to 3-6-1.
