College Basketball: Dayton women hold off GW for 14th straight win

The University of Dayton women’s basketball ran its win streak to 14 games and stayed perfect in Atlantic 10 play on Sunday with a 57-53 road win at George Washington.

The Flyers built a 12-point lead entering the fourth then held off the Colonials down the stretch to improve to 20-4 overall and 13-0 in A-10 play. GW fell to 12-12, 7-5.

Jenna Burdette led Dayton with 13 points and seven rebounds. Jayla Scaife, back in the lineup after missing a game due to injury, scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Lauren Cannatelli had nine points and JaVonna Layfield had eight points and snared six rebounds.

After falling behind 12-8 through one quarter, Dayton outscored GW 41-25 over the middle two quarters to take a 49-37 lead into the fourth.

The Colonials scored the first five points of the fourth and tied the game at 53 on Mei-Lyn Bautista’s 3-pointer with 1:26 to play.

Alex Harris gave the Flyers the lead right back on a contested bucket in the lane with 57 seconds left. Following a missed GW 3-pointer, Cannatelli hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds left for the final margin.

Dayton is off until next Sunday when it honors Burdette, Layfield and Harris on Senior Day against Fordham. The Flyers can clinch at least a share of the A-10 title with a win over the Rams (19-6, 10-2).
