UD dominates in 38-3 win over Davidson

It was a game of firsts for the University of Dayton football team.

It was the first Pioneer Football League win for the Flyers, the first time UD scored over 20 points this season and, as coaches pointed out, the first complete game Dayton has played this year.

Dayton (2-4, 1-2) dominated Davidson 38-3 on the road Saturday at Richardson Stadium in Davidson, N.C. Redshirt freshman running back Connor Kacsor led UD with 135 yards rushing on 11 carries and scored two touchdowns on runs over 30 yards. Kascor’s 100-yard performance was the first time a UD freshman has rushed for 100 yards since 2000.

“Our coaches said that they could tell we all clicked during the game,” Kacsor said. “(The) offense and defense and special teams were all playing together, all complementing each other. Look at the results. When we do that, we’re a force.”

UD outgained Davidson 408-303 in total offense as the Flyers racked up 289 yards rushing alone. Dayton head coach Rick Chamberlin credited the offensive line.

“I thought our offensive line was better physically,” Chamberlin said. “I thought we were stronger, our feet were better.”

Dayton scored on its opening drive for the first time this season. Senior running back Robert Washington took a handoff and ran in for an 8-yard touchdown.

It was all Dayton would need.

Two drives later, redshirt sophomore quarterback Jake Voigt rotated in for fellow redshirt sophomore and starting quarterback Will Bardo. The Flyers ended up scoring on a 25-yard field goal by redshirt senior kicker Pat Sankovic.

The quarterback switch was in Dayton’s game plan.

“We felt that Jake deserved some game action and on the other side it allowed Will to stand on the sideline while the offense was out on there, so he could see what the defense was doing and how we should respond to it,” Chamberlin said.

UD scored again on a 31-yard run by redshirt freshman running back Connor Kacsor.

The Flyers scored twice more before the half, first on Bardo’s pass to redshirt senior wide receiver Nik Gillum, then again when redshirt freshman defensive end Devon Morgan scooped up a fumble and ran 66 yards as the clock expired.

Davidson (0-5, 0-2) kicked a field goal on its first drive on the second half. Dayton responded with a 38-yard touchdown run by Kacsor.
