Dayton Flyers coach: Election Day always special

Kevin Kuwik, son of an elected official, proud of players for voting

Dayton Flyers assistant coach Kevin Kuwik shared his voting experience with a series of Tweets on Tuesday.

Kuwik took an 18-month leave of absence from 2004-05 when he was an assistant coach for the Ohio Bobcats to serve with the 113th Engineer Battalion of the Indiana National Guard in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. As he wrote on Twitter, he is also the son of an elected official. His dad Edward was the major of Lackawanna, N.Y., and was also an Erie County legislator from 1983-2005.

“Growing up as the son of a 30-plus year elected official, Election Day was always special,” Kuwik wrote. “I remember going into the voting booth with my dad to pull the lever with his name next to it, first as mayor and then as county legislator. Now, as a coach, it is great to be on the other side, being a part of so many of our players voting for the first time. Say what you want about this election and the candidates, participating in our government is one of the things that makes America the special place that it is.

“In this day and age, it is easy to sit back and complain about things that could be better, but it is so important that we don’t forget that our founding fathers didn’t just talk, they took action. Voting is one of the small ways that we can get involved in making our communities and our country a better place, and I hope these young men take that lesson to heart moving forward.”
