The Basically British gift shop started at the Second Street Market nearly eight years ago, and moved to its current location in 2006. Ronald and Morris added the tea room in 2009.
“At some point, you have to say it’s time to retire,” Morris said in a phone interview this afternoon. “The end of the lease is a natural breaking point.”
Morris said she and her life partner and business partner Ronald have received emails from around the country after word of the closing spread.
“It’s sad on one hand, but there are a lot of things we want to be involved with that we haven’t been able to do,” Morris said. “But it’s not without a few tears.”
In an email to customers, the couple wrote: “From our beginning as a vendor at the Second Street Market, to the loyalty and enthusiasm we have been so fortunate to enjoy in the tearoom, we have met wonderful people and made many new friends whom we value greatly. As sad as we are, we have a treasure-trove of memories to which each of you has contributed. Our hope is that you also will take with you many pleasant memories of Basically British.”
