This is Birmingham, Ala.-based Books-A-Million’s third store under the 2nd & Charles nameplate.
The region’s other Books & Co. store, located at The Greene in Beavercreek, will continue to operate. The Kettering store’s 30 employees were given the choice of either working for 2nd & Charles or Books & Co. at The Greene, said Jeff Skipper, a spokesman for Books-A-Million.
Large format, used bookstores have performed well in other parts of the country and executives expect the 2nd & Charles concept will do well in Dayton.
“When people see the incredibly unique environment and all the different used items for sale, from video game consoles and music to bestsellers and classics, it’s sure to become a destination for bargain hunters and collectors from all over,” spokesman Eric Bishop said in a release.
Half-Price Books, a chain of used bookstores, operates a store in Beavercreek.
Several other retailers in the region sell used media, such as CDs, video games and other items.
2nd & Charles buys and sells books, CDs, vinyl records, DVDs and Blu-Ray, video games, comic books, iPods and iPads, eReaders and video game consoles.
In 1992, Books-A-Million bought Books & Co. from a group of investors for undisclosed terms. The company also previously operated a store in the Dayton area under the Books-A-Million nameplate, but closed that store years ago.
Hours for the Kettering store will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday.
