Sinclair Community College, Montgomery County Department of Job and Family Services, and the National Composite Center are offering a free composites technician training program — and enrollment is starting.
The first training sessions are set to start in January 2010.
This is the first training program of its kind in the nation, said Gary Honnert, a Sinclair spokesman.
“We anticipate a great response,” Honnert said today, Dec. 4.
After the composite center announced the program last month, residents began calling the county Job Center, Honnert said.
“We already are picking names” he said.
Training will be offered in two sessions. Level I training will be Jan. 18-Feb. 5 and again March 29-April 16, 2010. The second level will be Feb. 15–March 19 and again April 26–May 28, 2010.
Trainees must successfully complete the first level to advance to the second. Training will be conducted at the composite center in Kettering. Classes are limited to 50 qualified applicants per training session, Sinclair said.
Three screening sessions — open to the public — are planned for Dec. 15 at the Ponitz Sinclair Conference Center off Fourth Street on the college’s downtown Dayton campus.
“Quite honestly, we wants hundreds of folks to show up on Dec. 15,” Honnert said.
The free screening sessions will begin at 9 a.m., 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m. Free underground parking is available.
To qualify, students must be dislocated workers or have a family income that does not exceed 200 percent of the federal poverty level and meet Workforce Investment Act eligibility requirements, Sinclair said. Honnert said the public is welcome to attend the sessions and let “the experts” determine eligibility.
Written assessments and drug screening will be required at no charge to applicants. Selected participants must provide their own transportation to classes and training.
