Arcade Seafood closes after more than 7 decades

Arcade Seafoods at 111 W. First St. in downtown Dayton, which traced its roots back more than 70 years, has closed permanently.

"After 22 years of business, Ted and I are closing our doors," Tammy Phillips wrote on the Arcade Seafoods website and on the shop's Facebook page. "Thanks to everyone that supported us throughout these years. Ted is continuing his education with hopes of contributing to the Dayton area retail scene. I'm just going to take a nap!"

The couple bought Arcade Seafoods from Sol Friedman in 1992, when the shop was still located inside the now-shuttered Arcade on South Ludlow Street near Fourth Street. The seafood shop had already been in business for more than a half-century when the sale was completed. The Phillips moved the seafood shop to its current location in 2005 and added “at 111” to the Arcade Seafoods name.

The new owners also added more appetizers, grilled fish and chicken items to the menu.

Ted Phillips had started working at the Arcade when he was 17 and was still a student at Colonel White High School.

The seafood shop was an important part of Arcade history, having been one of the last two tenants among the hundreds of businesses that had been in the Arcade since it opened in 1902.
